2006
NCT
Winner Michael Denham's Interview:
VCMC: You are a
past NCT champion. What kind of
motorsport experience in did you have coming into your first autocross
season?
Michael:
Prior to autocross, I had no
real life motorsport experience. However, I have a lot of experience
with racing simulations for the PC (mostly Grand Prix Legends and Live
For Speed) using a steering wheel and pedal set. These can only teach
you so much, but I am more comfortable driving at (and sometimes
beyond!) the limit in autocross than I would have been without this
experience.
VCMC: Can you
discuss what modifications you did to go
faster in your championship season?
Michael:
For the car, I replaced the (17
year old) shock absorbers with some new Koni Yellows, purchased a spare
set of wheels and some r-compound tires, and got a good alignment from
PDM Racing. As there is really nothing much to adjust in stock class
other than tire pressures, I then focused all my energy into learning
the course layouts and working on my driving.
VCMC: What advice
would you offer to the novices in
their effort to win the PDM NCT title?
Michael: Try and
prepare your car as best you can for your class. Once you have your car
all working well, try and focus as much as possible on the driving and
learning how your car handles. If you make changes to your car every
event, you are going to have to relearn how your car handles, but if
you leave it as it is, you can really build on your experience with the
car each time you compete. Make sure you’re well prepared for
each event and get as many course walks in as you can. Ask a lot of
questions. I was forever bugging the experienced guys (and will be for
a long time), getting a ride with them, having them ride with me,
asking where I could improve, finding out what tire pressures people
were running…. If you are able to, take part in the Velocity
Driving School. I did this last year and really benefited from what I
learned.
